What would happen if there were holes in the floor of heaven ?
Would it make a difference in the way you think and act ?
The autum of my 30th year here on God's green earth was one to remember. I was a young father in the mist'd of fall planting season. I had a young son just about to turn three and a loan at the bank in need of repayment. That was the reason I was on the tractor late that night planting an oat crop on rented land. About 11:00 pm as I watched the wheat drill kick up dust in my tractors rear view mirror Steve Warner sang a song on the radio called
" holes in the floor of heaven". Most of you folks know it. It
deals with the idea that a loved one, his Grandmother I believe, watched over him through holes in heavens floor. The premise brought him comfort. I want to turn that premise around today as we ponder our attitudes and actions this holiday season. Let's, for the sake of aurgument, say Mr. Warner's song has legs and Grandma is watching.Would she say "child, well done" or would your ear be gripped firmly between her thumb and forefinger as you both travel quikely toward the nearest woodshed? Have your thoughts and actions been worthy of Grandma's thoughtful gaze? Mine have not. In a season when many don't have enough to eat I complain that I gain weight. In a season when many dont have jobs I complain that I need a vacation from mine. In a season when many will go without a visit from their child, I'm concerned that I may not have spent enough money on them.
No, I dont think My Granny would be pleased.
So, lets ask ourselves a question. As Farmers and Ranchers what could we do to make Granny happy as she gazes down from her cloud? Maybe we could go by the elevator today and sell a little grain and take the proceeds to our regional childrens home. Maybe we could go by the shop later and grab a few pounds of hamburger meat from the freezer and share some of that fat calf we butcherd this fall with the widow women down the way. Maybe we could go by and pick up that kid whose Dad is in Afganistan and take him hunting while he's home from school on Christmas break.
Ya see there, it's not so hard. It just took a little reflecting on our own blessings to prompt us to give of them. And isn't that what Granny taught us? I hope your granny is smiling now. Mine is,
and I hope you are too. MERRY CHRISTMAS from everybody here at the little ranch on Ranger Creek.
