Early Tuesday morning we had a welcome visitor to our place. I was about to think it had forgotten its way. I’ll explain...
I had begun to think that it had forgotten the way to the ranch. This time of the year it comes thru our northwest gate, but we hadn’t seen it in a while. We’ve been leaving the light on too…just in case it came in late. Wouldn’t want it to stumble. What I am talking about, you ask?
Rain.
It blew in fast and said it couldn’t stay long. We spoke awhile…about a half worth…and then it was on its way again. It said it had to be at the coast by daylight.
Well, it was good to see it. I called to it as it went out the southeast gate,
“Come back when you can stay longer!”
Man, I miss it…so do our pastures. They miss it so bad that cows are leaving the area. It’s odd though…that record corn prices and drought have coincided. You can actually cull a cow and take her salvage price and add 20% back and buy a good pair. Lots of S. T. cattlemen are scaling back and restocking with your and quality.
On the crop front, our corn is pant pocket high. We knifed in nitrogen last week. The first fresh market pickling cucumbers went to market last week. Of course, both these crops are irrigated stand but were hoping our old friend will come back again thru that northwest gate and stay awhile this time.
